Club Highlight: UAF Fencing Club

By Nóra McIntyre

Hear ye, hear ye!

For those who live by the code of the blade, I know just the organization for you!

UAF Fencing Club meets on Wednesdays from 7-10 pm and Saturdays from 12-4 pm at the UPark campus (1000 University Ave). We are a friendly and welcoming community of fencers who are always thrilled to see more members join. The club is a collaboration between the university and the Fairbanks community, so you don’t need to be a UAF student to join.

The fencing club is a wonderful space for those with fencing experience to free-fence, train, and participate in tournaments with fellow fencing enthusiasts. Gear and weapons are available to borrow if you don’t have your own equipment.

At this time, the Fencing Club does not teach fencing, so if you are a beginner, UAF offers a terrific introductory class to learn the fundamentals of fencing, which is recommended before joining the club. Many of our club members come straight from that course.

As to the culture and atmosphere of the Fencing Club, our club president has the following to share:

“From my first-semester fencing at UAF, I knew it would be a permanent installation in my life. Our community is fairly small, but we have strong and healthy competition between fencers. We are casual, friendly, open, and here to train and get better at the sport we all love. It’s a good balance.”
