FIRE - The 101st lighting of the bonfires was accompanied with music from local DJs.

On October 12, UAF celebrated the 101st Starvation Gulch across the Student Recreation Center’s parking lot. DJs (and fellow students) the Brothers Ramirez, DJ the Arc and DJ Lagosa, opened the night’s festivities with an hour-long set replete with high-energy hits, hyping up the audience for the arrival of the bonfires and the headliner, DJ Siren, who enthusiastically took the reins over and led the crowd in a countdown for the bonfire lighting. She went on to play a two-hour set chock full of dance staples, quite a few of which were specially selected to fit into the theme of ‘fire.’ DJ Siren also played crowd-pleasers like Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More,” Don Omar’s inimitably catchy “Danza Kuduro,” and a whole roster of bangers from Mr. 305 himself, Pitbull. As a Cuban who’s lived a good chunk of time in that zip code, it was heartwarming to see so many UAF students and community members go mad with energy due to Pitbull’s infectious charisma.

All three DJs kept the eventgoers sweating and sated as they alternated between the dancefloor and the fires. The Brothers Ramirez were just the right pick to get UAF revved up for DJ Siren, her shouts of “Talk to me!” echoing throughout the night as she basked in the euphoria of the dancing, the fires, and the sweet cheers of new and old faces mingling and reveling in a Saturday night spent right.

Of course, the night wouldn’t be complete without discovering who won the long-standing and much-sought-after “Big Ass Trophy” for the tallest bonfire. This year’s winner was Chi Alpha, so congratulations to them!

Remember, folks, that this is a yearly tradition here at UAF, so if you want to get involved, it’s never too late to reach out to the Nanook Traditions team and do your part and build an even bigger, badder bonfire for 2025!
