UAF’s Winter Carnival Recap

By Autumn McPherson

During the week of Valentine's Day, the University of Alaska Fairbanks hosted their annual Winter Carnival. On the first day of the three-day event, UAF hosted skating under the stars and s’mores making, and they had planned to host a polar plunge. Unfortunately, there was a small rip in the container that held the water for the plunge. The polar plunge will be rescheduled once the new container is received. Students could skate in the outdoor rink outside the Student Recreation Center and make s’mores over the nearby fire pit at night.

The second day of the event consisted of mainly Valentine-themed activities as it landed on the holiday. Arctic Java acted as the craft center where students could get “engaged” to others using ring pops, bring home a plant, learn origami, build plant-themed Legos, and watch The Proposal. Later in the day, there was a Social Dance Workshop and a Hotteok (a Korean pancake) cooking workshop on the upper floor of the Wood Center.

The final day of Winter Carnival consisted of dog mushing, Nordic skiing, ice wall climbing, indoor skating, and a pool party. During these events, food stations were located in nearby areas.
