Fairbanks in Bloom: A Guide to Midnight Sun Fun

By Nóra McIntyre

Summer has come to a close here in Fairbanks: so long to the days of eternal sun, so long to the wildflowers in bloom, and so long to the unrelenting mosquitoes! But, if you are wondering about the summer activities and events that went on in Fairbanks, read on! This short guide compiles just a few goings-on planned by the Fairbanks community. All of the activities listed are family friendly and accessible by walking/biking or public transportation, and many of them are free.

Music lovers enjoyed Concerts in the Plaza, presented by Festival Fairbanks in the Golden Heart Plaza. This concert series ran through July on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:30pm-1:30pm, and Wednesdays starting at 7pm. The music is free and open to the public, with rotating musical artists and groups. For even more opportunities to experience free live music, folks made sure to drop in for Music at the Garden. This music series is held at the UAF Georgeson Botanical Garden, which is easily accessible from campus. Concerts were held through August, on Thursdays from 7-8pm. Music in the Garden features a variety of local artists and groups, and brings together community members and visitors of all ages to listen, dance, and enjoy the gardens. The Georgeson Botanical Garden is also open to the public every day of the week, and is a great spot to sit or stroll and enjoy the various plants in bloom.

Those seeking nearby nature can make a trip to Creamer’s Field to spend time at their Migratory Waterfowl Refuge. Here you have the chance to view sandhill cranes, among other migratory birds and wildlife. Creamer’s Field also has a number of trails that you can explore on your own, or attend a guided nature walk, which are offered Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 10am. Another way to spend time in nature is to hit the trails around UAF’s campus. These extensive trails are perfect for walking, jogging, biking, and observing plants and wildlife. You may cross paths with robins, foxes, moose, moss, mushrooms, and many others! For another opportunity for movement and mindfulness, join in on Saturday morning yoga with the UAF Yoga Club. Yoga classes are held Saturdays from 9:30-11am at the University Park Building Gym, with various classes being taught by different instructors. There is a five dollar suggested donation, which is waived for UAF students.

Find locally made crafts, food, and produce at the Tanana Valley Farmers Market, which runs Wednesdays from 11am-4pm and Saturdays from 9am-4pm. The market has everything from coffee, to ceramics, to baked goods, to jewelry, to locally grown fruits and vegetables, and much more. One Fairbanks local says that she believes the market is a great opportunity for the community to get outside and gather together, as well as enjoy fresh local goods. Attending the market is also a great way to discover local vendors and small business owners who may not have physical storefronts.

Foodies explored new tastes at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, which hosted Foodie Food Trucks daily through July, starting at 11am until the food trucks ran out of food. And speaking of the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, they also hosted the Tanana Valley State Fair from July 28th to August 6th at the Fairgrounds. This event cost the price of admission, with ticket prices found online. The fair featured various exhibitions, rides, and activities, including massive vegetables that have had the chance to grow under the midnight sun.
