Nanooks vs. Northwest Nazarene University

January 30th, 2025, the Nanooks Women’s Basketball team faced off against Northwest Nazarene University. The game was nothing less than intense as the Nanooks got their first five points, from athlete Jayda Van Dyke, within the first two and a half minutes. Destiny Reimers shoot seven impressive baskets within the first period, quickly becoming the game leader for the night, ending the period with a 23-13 score. The second period began with a 24-24 tie, the first of three during the game. Athlete Bobbie Clark took action with consecutive layups. However, with only four seconds to spare, the opposing team got a three-pointer, ending the second period with a 41-38 score.
During halftime, the brief Warrior of the Month ceremony took place. The first of the three recipients was Manuel Melendez, a graduate student earning his MFA in Creative Writing at the College of Liberal Arts. Manuel is also the editor-in-chief for The Sun Star and Permafrost.
The second recipient was Nanooks swimmer Adeline Berry, a senior studying business administration, the swim team captain, and the copresident of the Nanooks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Adeline is also a consistent volunteer for the Nanooks, the College of Business and Management, and the Fairbanks community. Her head coach, Ksenia Gromova, stated, “We can’t think of anyone more deserving to receive this award.”
The final recipient was Kyle Gaffney, a junior studying business administration and the Assistant Captain of the Nanooks hockey team leading on the ice.
Amelia started off the second half of the game strong with a layup, gaining the team four points and quickly becoming a game leader with successful layups, defense rebounds, offense rebounds, turnovers, and free throws during the period. Destiny Reimers followed suit with three defense rebounds during the period. Unfortunately, Northwest Nazarene University continued to take the lead, ending the game with an 80-68 score.
